Christmas officially arrives in Grays this weekend with an afternoon of family entertainment at the town's annual Christmas lights switch-on.

Organised by the business-led Love Grays partnership, the event is taking place in Grays High Street from midday on Saturday.

In keeping with this year's pantomime at Thameside Theatre, children can enjoy an Aladdin's Magic Carpet Trail, culminating with a visit to Santa's Grotto at Grays Shopping Centre.

There will also be live entertainment on the main stage throughout the afternoon, with headline acts Matt Linnen – a former X Factor finalist – and Kobi, Charlie Dillon and Sienna Leigh – stars of The Voice Kids – performing from around 5:45pm.

Mayor of Thurrock, Barbara Rice, and the cast of this year's panto Aladdin – including former TOWIE regular Dan Osborne – will make their way to the stage soon afterwards for the big switch-on.

Councillor Barbara Rice said: "Christmas is always a special time of year and I am very excited about this year's switch-on.

"There are some brilliant acts and entertainment planned, and I would encourage everyone to come and join in the festive fun."

Councillor Deborah Huelin, portfolio holder for communities, said: "The Christmas lights switch-on is always a fantastic day for the whole family and a great way to mark the arrival of the festive season.

"It is also another example of the excellent attractions and events we have on offer in the borough, and I would encourage both residents and visitors to get out and discover Thurrock this winter."
