A Maldon choir group travelled to Belgium to take part in a second concert in memory of the soldiers lost in the First World War.

The choir from St Mary the Virgin Church in St Mary's Lane, Maldon performed at St Michael's Church in Ghent following a joint concert at their own church with the Livinuskoor.

Around 300 people looked on as the choirs performed both separately and together.

The programme included Rutter’s Requiem and pieces by composers from Bach to Karl Jenkins.

The church brought some of its own There But Not There Tommies from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund all the way to Belgium for the performance.

The choir had also decorated St Michael's Church with poppies, which are lesser recognised in Belgium.

A spokesman for the St Mary's Choir, said: “As in Maldon, the concert was accompanied with a slide show of images from both the Western Front and the Home Front in Belgium.

“As at the concert in St Mary’s, there were many tears from both the audience and the performers.

"Lasting friendships have been developed between St Mary’s Choir and the Livinuskoor and we hope that this will lead to many more collaborations in the future.

"On the occasion of the centenary of the end of so much slaughter, we all felt that the two concerts had demonstrated that coming together was far preferable to pulling apart."
