AN Olympic medallist boxer was called in officially open Walton's new hotly-anticipated Aldi supermarket.

On Thursday, London 2012 bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo cut the ribbon on new the store in front of excited shoppers.

Aldi also rewarded the first 30 shoppers to arrive on the opening morning with a complimentary bag full of fresh fruit and vegetables from the company's Super 6 range.

Speaking after the opening, the Team GB star said: "A big thanks to everyone involved with this morning’s opening and especially the Aldi Walton on the Naze team, who made me feel so welcome.

"It was fantastic to meet so many lovely shoppers and to be involved in the Aldi Get Set to Eat Fresh campaign, as an athlete the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables is vital for keeping me fighting fit.”

The new store, located in Kirby Road, spans more than 1,254sqm and has created 30 new jobs for the area.

Store manager Craig Thorn-Anderson said: "Antony was a big hit with our shoppers this morning and especially patient when it came to selfie-taking.

"The Aldi Walton on the Naze team would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who visited us this morning for making it an opening to remember.”
