A NOTORIOUS junction in Clacton has been labelled as one of the most dangerous in Britain following another serious crash.

Shocking CCTV images show the moment a man in his 50s was hit by a black BMW estate car on Monday afternoon.

The man was Ellis Road when the car turned the corner and threw him onto its bonnet.

The images show the pedestrian lands underneath the front wheels of the car.

The driver then gets out of his car as on-lookers rush to help.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the man was taken to Colchester General Hospital with head injuries, which are not believed to be serious.

Campaigner Les Baker, of Ellis Road, who lives next to the “dangerous” junction, has called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed.

The latest images captured by his CCTV camera shows a motorist on the wrong side of the road before his vehicle hits the pedestrian.

Mr Baker said: “Another pedestrian knocked down trying to cross the road. Same place as the previous one. Another example why there is a need for a crossing before someone is killed.

“Despite several attempts to improve safety, it is still just as dangerous.

“Unfortunately it seems like if there are no fatalities, it is not considered a problem.”

Clacton and Frinton Gazette:

Mr Baker has captured images of dozens of crashes over the past few years.

In May last year a woman in her 80s from Clacton suffered serious injuries after she was hit by a car while crossing the road.

Speaking following that incident, Mr Baker said: “This area is still lethal to pedestrians, especially the elderly and the very young, and we really need to have a crossing in place.”

An Essex Highways spokesman said measures have been taken at the site in recent years.

He said: “We have made several improvements to the safety of this junction in the past few years, but traffic calming will never completely combat the effects of reckless driving.

“We will however continue work with local residents to make the junction as safe as possible.”

Paul Honeywood, the area’s county councillor, added: “I’ve raised the issue on numerous occasions and improvements have been made.

“But the action that has been taken is clearly not good enough.

“This will need to be looked at seriously again and I will be raising the issue with County Hall.”

An Essex Police spokesman confirmed that no-one has been arrested in connection with the incident on Monday but that an investigation is on-going.
