A POPULAR village carnival has been rescued after new members stepped in to save the day.

There were fears Great Bentley’s colourful village event could face the axe after more than 40 years unless residents came on board to take on the vital roles of chairman, secretary and treasurer.

But Freddy Stringer has now stepped up as chairman after the other positions were also filled.

Mr Stringer recently moved to the village from Braintree and now only two committee members are now needed to complete the team.

Those elected will either be responsible for creating an event programme or running a silent auction.

Mr Stringer, who has been on voluntary committees for the past 10 years, said enthusiasm is growing behind the scenes.

“We’ve had lots of new members and everyone is really keen to be involved,” he said.

“On the day we get a really good turnout from the community and everyone chips in which is amazing.

“The proceeds go back to community groups so everyone benefits. Last year there were four children’s groups who received a donation of £500 each and this year we want to make sure we support more.”

This year’s carnival is the 42nd and the theme is “When I grow up”.

It takes place on the village green on Saturday, June 24 and the nostalgic theme should encourage visitors to let their imaginations run wild.

In early March there will also be a family fun day when the carnival king, queen, prince and princess will be chosen.

Anyone aged over seven can apply if they are aged over seven-years-old.

Mr Stringer added: “It’s a simple process and people are picked on why they want to be part of it as well as their enthusiasm.

"This is a great opportunity to represent our village at other carnivals and to also make new friends.”
