A PENSIONER is warning people to be on their guard after being targeted by a phone scam.
Terence Smith received a text message saying he was owed a £284 tax rebate.
The retired building contractor became suspicious and contacted the Inland Revenue, who confirmed it was bogus.
"I thought blimey - I've got a tax refund," said Mr Smith, of Third Avenue, Frinton.
"I thought it was a bit strange because usually they write you a letter so I double-checked and they said it was a scam.
"Apparently they get your bank details and then clear out your account.
"I just want other people to know that it's best to double check before doing anything."
