HUNDREDS of people turned out to watch the thrills and spills of Clacton’s popular annual Donkey Derby.

The fun event, which is part of the town’s carnival, was held at Tendring Education Centre in Jaywick Lane for the first time on Monday night.

The event’s home for the past 36 years – Gainsford Avenue sportsground – is set to be developed for housing.

Local riders competed in seven different races, with the winner of each going through to the grand final.

Paul Townend, chairman of the carnival association, said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere – people love the donkeys.

“This year we had a competition for the best selfie with a donkey, which as won by a family on holiday here from Croydon. They won tickets to the fireworks.

“It is lovely to see families enjoying themselves – and not plugged into a computer.

“Changing location had its own challenges and we were a little overwhelmed by the number of people who came by car.

“Clacton Carnival has something for everyone, but the donkey derby is one of a kind.

“Local children from riding schools take part in the race, which is full of thrills and spills and great fun.

“If they fall off its more embarrassing than it is painful.”

Young carnival-goers also had a chance to ride a donkey themselves.
