Essex Police are reminding people to dial 101 to report a crime or raise a concern that doesn't require an emergency response.
A police spokesman said: "You can call 101 if your car has been stolen, your property has been damaged, you suspect drug dealing in your neighbourhood or if you need to report a minor traffic collision.
"101 does not replace 999. You should continue to call 999 in an emergency such as when a crime is in progress, a life is in danger or violence is being used or threatened."
The number is available at all times and will eventually replace the old Essex Police non-emergency number 0300 333 444 which is being phased out.
Calls to 101 cost 15 pence per call regardless what time of day you call or how long you are on the phone.
