I’M afraid that no superlatives exist in the English language that adequately describe the talents of Alan Barnes, this month’s guest at the Clacton Jazz Club.
Playing saxophone and clarinet, he thrilled us with his dexterity and sympathetic tonal quality and even Ted Beaumont (piano), who is himself in the top handful of keyboard players on the current “circuit”, was heard to remark that he felt he had never played so well as he did with this musical wizard.
Alan also demonstrated his wicked sense of humour throughout the evening with mock, cutting remarks about his collegues-Alan Morgan on bass and Geoff Lardner, drums, themselves leading lights and well respected in their own field.
Another truly remarkable evening.
The next one is on the last Sunday in November, at the Kingscliff Hotel, Holland-on-sea, starting at 7.30pm.
