STEVEN Walker (Letters, October 6) wrote that a house he lived in near the Mere, had a high tide mark, from the 1953 flood, five feet up the wall.

This lovely warm October reminds us of global warming. I think the oceans will absorb the melting glaciers for 50 years, but after that, sea levels will rise by meters. With more water in the oceans, tides will get bigger.

One thousand years from now, the whole of the Mere will be like the 3,500-year-old submerged city of Pavlopetri, that lies off the southern coast of the Greek mainland.

I think we should enjoy the Mere year by year, as its days are surely numbered.
