Parking Concerns

TENDRING First Councillors have recently held two meetings at the community centre in The Triangle Shopping Centre in respect of residents and councillors’ concerns of the highway problems besetting residents, school children and shoppers.

Many teachers and students of Tendring Technology College (Frinton) park in Rochford Way because there is insufficient parking available in the college grounds. Parents bringing and collecting their children cause more havoc and increase the danger to all users of the road at these particularly busy times - parking outside private properties, on double yellow lines and on the corner of the college access, which is extremely dangerous. Some even turn their vehicles in private driveways.

The college, the police, TDC and local councillors attended these meetings, together with local residents, in order to promote suggestions and answers to the problem, but neither ECC Highways not Conservative councillor Mick Page, (the local ECC councillor for this area) bothered to attend or respond to invitations to do so.

A survey has been carried out by Highways but they have decided that there is no need for changes as neither speed nor anti-social parking are causing any danger, in their opinion. One can only assume that they need to see some tragedy before they consider it necessary to change the dangerous system currently in place.

This is a college that is rated as one of the best in the county, but Essex County Council are not willing to make funding available to improve the parking facilities for their all-day users. Neither do they fund students over sixteen to use the bus.

This is a two school site with approximately 300 teachers and 2000 students who travel in from rural areas, Colchester and even Suffolk, necessitating a minimum 150 parking spaces at any one time.

It seems that ECC and Cllr Mick Page do not want to support the college in trying to be a good neighbour to local people and businesses, preferring to spend our taxes on unnecessary changes further up the road instead.

If you are concerned about these problems, please contact me on 01255 672603, or email cllr.ijohnson@tendringdc.gov.uk.

Cllr Brian Johnson.

Frinton and Walton Town Council.
