Sir, – Since 2009, the number of students attending Durham Gilesgate Sports College and Sixth Form Centre has declined by 30 per cent.

And yet the school has steadily expanded the number of senior positions.

It now has a senior management team of ten: head teacher, associate head teacher, two deputy head teachers, five assistant head teachers and a bursar.

Is it any wonder the secondary school, with just 234 students, has a budget deficit when it has to contribute to this overhead?

No wonder it is facing closure. With profligacy like this, we can understand why the Government is strenuously working to remove schools from local authority control.
