Golfing star Dale Whitnell has been crowned Colchester sport personality of the year

Once again the quality and diversity of sporting achievements in and around Colchester have been celebrated at the Borough’s annual sports awards ceremony.

The last 12 months have thrown up some stunning successes and more than 300 people gathered at the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the 2009 Sport Colchester Sports Personality Awards.

The awards were again sponsored by The Gazette and the Colchester-Blackwater School Sport Partnership.

Mayor of Colchester, Henry Spyvee, made presentations to honour and congratulate those who have excelled at their chosen sports on local, national and international levels throughout the last year.

Apart from the sporting success stories in 2009, there were, as always, also awards recognising the tireless work and dedication of the countless people who keep Colchester’s sports clubs and associations running.

Golfing ace Dale Whitnell received the double honour of the male personality and the premier award in recognition of a year of hard work and success.

The 21-year-old, from Tiptree, ended 2009 as England’s top amateur golfer and made the switch into the sport’s professional ranks after playing as part of Great Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team.

It was the second year running that Whitnell had been named as the male sports personality, but the first time he had scooped the main premier award.
