Stars include new riders

Colchester Stars hosted the third regional round of the British Youth and Junior competition.

Stars started with three new riders in the under-eights – Regan Retman, Jacob Floyde and Kai Ryan.

Retman had some close races on a new bike and grew in confidence as the match went on, while Floyde raced well for his first experience and narrowly missed a final place by one point, but after a shaky start and a change of bike, Ryan came back strongly to take the C final by storm.

Tom Smith and Eddie Smith were joined in the under-tens by newcomers Cormac Retman and Nathan King.

King showed great promise but along with Eddie Smith, was unable to make a final in this very competitive age group.

Cormac Retman had two second places to qualify for the D final, where he finished second, while Tom Smith, despite falling in his first race, came back to take three fine wins on his way to winning the B final and he is currently lying fifth overall in the standings.

Daniel Raison was Stars’ sole representative in the under-12s and is making his presence known as he improves with every race, finishing a creditable third in the D final.

Patrick Kruger and another newcomer, Gareth Oliver, were in the under-14s.

Oliver started well but found the oppositions’ experience hard to cope with, however, Kruger gained four second places to finally finish third in the B final, after slipping a pedal at the start, and he is currently lying sixth overall.

Alice Davies was in the girls’ 12 to 18s and she struggled after having two weeks off, but gained an A final place where she finished fourth.

She is lying fourth overall with a great result for her first season.
