SCOTT Farthing won Colchester Golf Club’s Poppy Appeal stableford, on the Braiswick course.

Played on Remembrance Sunday, with members respecting the silence at 11am, any point earned by the 107 entrants was well-deserved on such a bitterly cold but sunny day.

From such a large field, the clear skies did at least allow the last few groups to finish with some light from the darkening sky.

Eighteen-handicapper Farthing’s round was built on his front nine holes, where he scored 21 points. His back nine was much looser, where two non-scoring holes held him back, but the 17 points he did score were enough to put him ahead of the pursuing group by two clear points.

A countback was required to separate the chasing group of four players on 36 points.

Simon Rippingale (13) was second, from seven-handicapper Matt Black, and Caroline Slagel (30) took fourth spot from David Latta (ten).

Vicky Frost had an exceptional day in Tuesday’s ladies' Stableford.

From her 19-handicap, she racked up 42 points to win the day.

With two equal halves of 21 points, her golf was way ahead of the field by a majestic nine points.

She was singularly ahead of a line six of players all returning 33 points.

After the countback, Philippa Deman (10) took second spot, with Caroline Chambers (22) third.

Sharon Everett (28), Haley Joel (25), Sharon Manby (29) and Janet Austin (22) were the ones who took the minor placings, with everyone on 33 points.
