COLCHESTER Golf Club's Alan Macnaught captained the UK team to victory in the European Senior Golf Association's (ESGA) Masters Team Championship.

He was part of the squad that triumphed in the competition for golfers aged 70 years old and older at the 113 year-old Karlovy Vary Golf Resort, in the Czech Republic.

The UK team of six, which included two other Essex golfers, Cliff Keeble of Orsett and Tom Dods of Chigwell, won the 16-country, 54-hole scratch championship by six strokes ahead of runners-up Sweden.

The event was played over two rounds of four-ball better-ball plus one round of singles, with the best two of three scores counting on the first two days and the best four of six scores counting on day three.

Macnaught's scores were 73 (counting), 74 (counting), 85 (discarded).

The ESGA has 24 affiliated European nations, of which 16 were represented at this year's Masters Championship.

Macnaught qualified for the UK team via two-day events run countrywide by the United Kingdom Senior Golf Association (UKSGA), which anyone aged over 55 with a handicap of seven or better may join.
