BEV Thompson was triumphant as Stoke by Nayland Ladies played their Club Championship.

She won with an impressive 174 strokes played, ahead of second-placed Tracey Dickens (177 on countback) and Margaret Bentley, who was third.

The bronze trophy winner was Lesley Hitchcock with 196 strokes, a stroke ahead of runner-up Jane Golding.

Corinne Jackson secured the best nett score with 149, ahead of second-placed Barbara Jones with 150 strokes.

Players played both courses - 36 holes - playing the Constable course in the morning and the Gainsborough course in the afternoon.

A total of 17 ladies in the medal format, which proved a very demanding competition.

The club's Ladies were victorious in their final Harris Bowl match of the season against visitors Colchester.

Nora led the team out and secured a win on the 12th hole, 8&6, while Anne Hemmings secured the same win on the same hole.

Edel Rew won 6&5 on the 13th and after being one-up at the turn, Elaine Davidson was never down.

She finally clinched the match on the 17th, two-up with one to play.

Barbara Jones found herself up against a very in-form opponent and despite her best efforts, was unable to turn the match to her advantage.

Stoke by Nayland Ladies took part in the "Gruesome Greensomes" competition, with 14 pairs taking part.

Unlike ordinary Greensomes where players choose their best drive, instead your opponent chooses your worst drive.

They played on the Gainsborough course but sudden downpours caused flooding to the greens and it was decided to reduce to a nine-hole competition.

Winners: 1st Jill Line and Nicky Ledger 21pts; 2 Barbara Rowe and Trish Jackson 20pts; 3 Gwen Broadhead and Geraldine Russell 19pts.

More than 50 members of Stoke by Nayland Seniors section competed for the annual Club Captain’s Prize.

Club captain Don Wiggins played alongside Seniors captain Norman Davidson in the stableford competition, on the Gainsborough course.

Playing some of his best golf, Wiggins scored 43 points and had his handicap cut to single figures, his lowest ever.

In division one, Roger Davies scored an excellent 41 points, finishing a point ahead of second-placed Martin Brown.

John Wheatley headed division two with 40 points but this was not quite enough and Roger Davies was awarded the Club Captain’s Prize for 2017.

Results, division one: 1 Don Wiggins 43 points, 2 Roger Davies 41 points, 3 Martin Brown 40 points.

Division two: 1 John Wheatley 40 points, 2 Tom McKinley 39 points, 3 John Simpson 37 points.
