ESSEX University light heavyweight Jamie Hercus was unlucky to miss out on the English Youth Title Belt, at York Hall.

The talented 17-year-old, who has been only boxing for a year, is already eyeing a rematch after losing out to Phoenix Fire ABC's Jamie Aramayo at the iconic boxing venue, in Bethnal Green.

Hercus has already notched up the National Development junior under-80 kilogramme and Haringey under-81kg youth titles, so went into his latest competitive title fight with plenty of confidence.

However, the experienced Aramayo ensured a challenging bout over three, three-minute rounds.

Aramayo has had nearly 40 bouts and England trials but it was Hercus who showed the skill levels from the opening bell. Coming from behind a tight guard, the Essex University boxer imposed himself with the first punch, a stiff left jab. Aramayo replied in fashion and both boxers engaged in a battle of combination punching, where Hercus had the upper hand.

The first round was close but the Philip Morant Sixth Form student looked to have edged it.

Aramayo pushed forward in the second round, throwing more combinations.

But it was the right hand over the top of Hercus's left lead that scored him the points.

Hercus tightened his defence up and put together two and three-punch combinations that steadied the action but it looked like Aramayo might have shaded the round.

Both boxers knew it was tough in the ring in front of a good crowd, who watched an absorbing bout.

Hercus started to show superior fitness and was able to back Aramayo to the ropes.

But the Essex University boxer was unable to capitalise on his strength, allowing his opponent to get off the ropes and ultimately claim victory.

Aramayo was very sportsmanlike in victory, stating he did not deserve to win.

That was of little consolation for Hercus, who desperately wanted the belt.

But it nevertheless offered encouragement and the opportunity for a rematch in the near future for him to try and reverse the loss.
