Brennan Dickenson is hoping his dazzling display against Cambridge United is the first of many after enjoying a memorable league debut for Colchester United.

The 23-year-old’s magnificent strike on his home bow for the U’s set them on their way to a well-deserved 2-0 triumph at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

And Dickenson then turned provider near the end, producing the cross for substitute Denny Johnstone to wrap up their first League Two victory of the season.

It was an all-round impressive display by the left-sided wide-man, who joined Colchester from Gillingham earlier this summer.

And Dickenson says he intends to try and produce the same kind of performances on a regular basis, for his new club.

Dickenson said: “That’s what I want to be doing week in, week out for everyone.

“It was a great home debut for me and the boys getting the three points.

“To score a goal and get an assist in one game is all that I dream of in a game.

“I think we dominated the game for large parts and didn’t look like we were going to concede.”

Dickenson needed just seven minutes to score on his home bow for Colchester, after netting with a sweet left-foot strike.

The former Brighton youngster revealed that U’s head coach John McGreal has been encouraging him to shoot on goal, when the opportunity arises.

“The goal is up there with the best I’ve scored in my career,” said Dickenson.

“From the interlinking play between the boys and for me to hit like I did from the edge of the box, it’s probably up there.

“I saw a bit of space open up and I thought I’d strike it.

“If I get the ball around the edge of the box, the manager has been saying to me since I came in “you’ve got a good left foot, be confident and hit it”.

“That’s exactly what I’ve done and it’s found the bottom corner.”

Dickenson said he was equally pleased with the accurate cross he provided for Johnstone’s late header that wrapped up the points for Colchester.

Dickenson added: “Assisting a goal is almost as good as scoring one.

“I thrive off assists and without that, you wouldn’t create a goal in the first place.

“There was some good interlinking play between me and Doug Loft – we did that all of last season too (at Gillingham).

“I got on the end of it, a little half-volley across to Denny and he’s come flying in with his head and put it in the back of the net – what a finish it was.”
