IT was a close affair as Colchester Golf Club's Vic Pomphrett held his Captain’s Day.

Teams of four battled it out in a team competition open to all sections of the club, with the best two scores counting.

Pomphrett also introduced a double scoring yellow ball played with by each team member in rotation and included as one of the two scores.

The team of David and Claire Croger plus Beverley and Neil Parker returned 107 points and were declared winners.

They won on countback ahead of Jim Wilkinson, Mike Carroll, Dick Bokenham and Tim Rogers, who posted the same score.

Third place was also decided on countback and was won by Sheila and John Dornan, along with Mike Withers and Richard Shackell.

Nearest the pin prizes were on the fourth Louisa Storey (6ft) and Brendan Booth (28in), while on the eighth, it was Alison Clare (19ft 7in) and Roger Wright (3ft 6in) and on the 13th, Jo Mager (14ft 6in) with Roger Wright getting a double with 11ft 10in.

Adam Harper won the putting competition with all proceeds going to the Captain’s Charity, which was The Riding for the Disabled Association.

Linda Freeman took pole position, in the ladies' Charles Bland Medal.

Her nett 75 for a 20 handicap was enough to put her ahead of Judith Robertson (16), who carded 76.

Third place was secured by Janet Austin (24) after scoring a nett 77 with Annie Johnston (14) in fourth returning a nett 79, pipping Claire Croger (24) after a countback.

Iain Cruickshank (eight) returned 37 points to win the Sunday Stableford from Jonathan Gilbert (5) on countback.

Ian Parry (nine) had 36 points along with Ben Williams (five) to take third and fourth spots.

The Vets played their stableford along with their Anniversary Trophy.

Simon Rippingale (12) snatched the honours from Peter Robinson (14) who along with Mike Lapham (11), Dick Bokenham (12) and Michael Berry (20), all returned 36 points.
