FRINTON'S mixed D team hosted Wivenhoe C in a key match in their fight for the Colchester and District League title.

The hosts got off to an impressive start in the division five contest, winning all three games, followed by one game in the second round.

They then dug deep and showed great determination in the third round, securing two games, 8-0, 8-1.

Elaine Kearle-Aldread partnered Lee Milner and they won all three of their games, followed by Richard Baldwin and Jane Noah, who won two games. Matt and Yvonne Gough won one game to secure a 6-3 victory.

Captain Matt Gough said: "It's always a pleasure to welcome other teams to our club.

"Wivenhoe were fighters to the finish and it was one of those games where the score did not reflect the effort put in by our opponents.

"They were a truly superb side, with very canny players.

"However, my team pulled out all the stops to secure this victory and knuckled down to do the job in style in the crucial third round."

Frinton D are in with a chance of winning the title.

With one more match to be played, every game will count in their final outing.

Meanwhile, Frinton ran an inter-schools tournament for six local primary schools.

Thirty-seven young players participated and the tournament was focused around the club's outreach tennis programme, which runs year round.

Head coach Chris Harris organised the event and was delighted to oversee an afternoon of fun, with some competitive tennis enjoyed by all.

Players from Frinton Primary, Holland Park, Walton, Rolph, St Philomena's and Hamford Academy took part in the round-robin tournament, which saw Frinton as runners-up to eventual winners Rolph.

Players and spectators enjoyed the afternoon and have agreed to repeat the experience in the very near future.
