CLACTON and District Indoor Bowls Club emerged victorious in the Essex Coastal Cup.

This is a competition for novices with two years and under bowling experience.

Colchester, who won last year, were the hosts.

Clacton had been runners-up on that occasion and were determined to better their performance this time around.

Following a careful selection process by Jean Taylor, five players and one reserve were called up to play.

This was a mixed fours competition, with seven ends being played per game.

Every team member played their part and the coastal side triumphed by winning all their five games.

Clacton had some amazing support from Taylor and Sylvia Broadbent.

A special thanks goes to reserve Adrian Smith, who did not get the opportunity to play but for being a fantastic sport.

Clacton will now host the event in 2017.

Final results: 1 Clacton, 2 Jacks Centre, 3 Colchester Blue, 4 Colchester Red, 5 Harwich, 6 Essex County.

Clacton’s team consisted of Lesley Hinson, Don Harrop, Tracy Kinton, Carol Coyle and Teresa Highstead.

Kinton and Highstead played in the competition last year, so next year they will no longer qualify.

Meanwhile, Clacton played a friendly against Thameside Wanderers.

This was a game of mixed fours and they won by 107 shots to 88.

Vic Hunt was captain for the day.

The top rink for Clacton was rink three, which consisted of James Lamb, Margaret Smallbone, Colin Harris and Hunt.

Clacton’s ladies held their annual Ladies’ Captain’s Day, which was organised by captain Stella Newell, vice-captain Joyce Hill and secretary Jean Taylor.

The spider was won by Barbara Mahoney.

Each player then randomly picked a disc to establish which team they would play in. Each player played two games of six ends.

All players kept their scores and those with the biggest difference won.

With a fantastic difference of plus 16, Chris King won overall.

All proceeds of the day, totalling £240.50, were donated to Clacton’s nominated charity of the year, MS UK.
