ROGER Wright scored plus three to win Colchester Golf Club’s Moy Cup.

Wright, now playing off a handicap of five, has been steadily building his game during the summer and he finally came good with a bogey score of plus three to secure his victory in this one of the club’s oldest competitions.

Kevin Prince took second place.

Prince (12), who also returned a plus three score, missed a six-inch putt for a birdie on the 16th while Wright wavered with bogeys on the 16th and 17th.

Wright then steadied the ship long enough to finish with a birdie on the 18th to give himself the stronger back nine holes to better Prince after the countback.

The Moy Cup was first played for in 1910 after being presented by a well know local coal merchant CT Moy.

Originally the winners were presented with bags of coal but life has changed in the intervening 105 years as the victors this year left empty-handed.

Third spot was secured by Stuart Bark (18) who, along with Scott Vass (15) and Alan Sharrocks (2), returned a score of plus two. Places were decided after a countback.

The ladies’ competition last Tuesday was cancelled due to the heavy rain.
