TENDRING Volleyball Club’s young guns turned on the style to make National Shield progress.

The Frinton-based men’s team beat Farnborough Vipers 3-1 (27-25, 25-13, 22-25 25-18), in Saturday’s second-round contest at Tendring Technology College.

The original plan was for a triangular event, also involving London Knights.

However, the Knights pulled out due to a lack of players and that means Tendring now advance into the next round, where they face a home match against Manchester Marvels.

Tendring chairman Alex Porter was delighted to go through and afterwards sung the praises of young quartet Adam Duce, Chester Searle, Johah Thomas and Ryan Everett.

He said all four caught the eye and boosted their chances of regular involvement with the club’s National League side.

“It was great to go through,” said Porter.

“This match gave us the opportunity to experiment and although a few played out of position, they stepped up and got the job done.

“It gave some of our younger players a chance and all of them acquitted themselves very well.

“Adam, who usually plays for our division three academy side, had an amazing game – the game of his life – to win the man-of-the-match award (which the club call their Mrs Bruce Award).

“Chester was excellent as our libero and we were also really pleased with Jonah, who’s become a regular part of our first-team squad, and Ryan.

“All four did very well and grabbed their opportunity with both hands.”
