Braintree Town marched into the first round proper of the FA Cup but needed extra-time to do it after a brave performance from Weymouth.

The scores were locked at 3-3 after full-time at Cressing round in the fourth round replay on Tuesday night but goals from Simeon Akinola and Dan Walker in each of the extra period sealed the match 5-3.

The Iron will now entertain League One Chesterfield in the next round.

After both sides had tested the opposing keepers it was the home side that took the lead just before the break.

Jordan Cox chased down a high ball over the defence and keeper Jason Matthews clearance hit Cox and he was able to guide the ball into an empty net on 42 minutes.

Two minutes later Simeon Akinola almost added another but his shot was saved and Ryan Peters blazed the rebound over the bar.

The Iron then doubled their advantage as Akinola fired in from the edge of the box into the left-hand corner of the goal on 54 minutes, for his first goal for the club.

But Weymouth weren’t out of the tie and Adam Kelly pulled one back, on 62 minutes, when he curled the ball in from outside the box.

However, Walker restored the Iron’s two-goal advantage on 74 minutes.

But Weymouth hit back immediately as Stuart Yetton’s cross was turned in at the back post by Chris Shephard a minute later.

And the visitors pulled it level when, after a goalmouth scramble, Yetton fired in to the roof of the net on 76 minutes.

The score remained the same until the end of the 90 minutes and sent the game into extra-time.

And it was the Iron that took the advantage when Akinola headed home on three minutes into the first period.

Walker made it 5-3 and secured the Iron’s passage into the next when he ran in on goal and fired in from the edge of the box four minutes after the start of the second period of extra-time.
