Mersea Island Rugby Club made an impressive start to life at their new home at the Glebe with a comprehensive 38-20 victory over Ipswich YM.

Prior to kick off the club marked the official opening of the new changing rooms, which was made possible with funding from the RFU, and Sport England and support from West Mersea Town Council.

West Mersea Town Council Deputy Mayor Beverley Perkins cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony with councillors Wendy Bixby and Eric Straughan in attendance along with club committee members and players.

Also there were the President of Eastern Counties Rugby Union John Taylor and President of Suffolk Rugby Union Ray Collins who presented the club with official RFU Accreditation.

Mersea club captain and coach Jon Williams said: “I am delighted with the win and squad performance, every player showed total commitment and it was a deserved victory.

“It was a wonderful way to start rugby life at the Glebe but it’s only one win, and I am not getting carried away.

"We need to build on this victory and keep working on our play."
