Their season may have ended in a defeat at Mistley, but it didn’t mean Colchester and East Essex fell short in their bid to retain the Piri Piri North Essex League premier division title.

The cancellation of Saturday’s game between Wivenhoe and Mistley meant Colchester couldn’t be overhauled at the summit of the top flight regardless of how their fixture finished against the Swans the following day.

That game did go ahead, but Colchester were unable to mark their title triumph with a final-day victory as Mistley beat them by 63 runs.

The Swans had made 255 for six after a knock of 127 by Danny Goff and a 76 from Damien Smith and that proved too much of a target for Colchester as, despite a century by Andrew Kennedy, they could only make 192 for eight.

Mistley’s win saw them take third place in the premier division, with Wivenhoe finishing second.

Divisions two, four and five had seen their champions decided the week before, but there was also a title fight concluded in division one with High Easter completing their expected success with a six-wicket win against Springfield.

The final piece of silverware was decided in division three as Stebbing picked it up in emphatic fashion with a 304-run win against West Mersea seconds.

Five Stebbing players made half-centuries in their 377 for three before Mersea were skittled out for just 73.

In division two, Witham finished their season by taking third place with a 109-run win at Ardleigh.

Jack Sambrook made 68 in Witham’s 189 for seven before Paul Bellehewe ripped through the Ardleigh line-up with figures of six for seven.

Kurt Lamont offered the only resistance with 55 as Ardleigh were all out for 80.

West Bergholt also ended on a high as they denied Eight Ash Green a top-three finish with an eight-wicket victory that included an unbeaten half-century by Darren Davies.
