Colchester United have missed out on the signing of defender Daniel Jones.

The Gazette understands that the U’s were closing in on a deal to sign the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player, after he left Championship club Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent last week.

Jones was believed to be one of a number of targets Colchester manager Joe Dunne was chasing, as he bids to add more experience to his squad.

However, the 26-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield, has instead signed a short-term deal for League Two promotion-chasers Port Vale where he will play under former Colchester assistant manager, Micky Adams.

I'm not really that surprised, after all, who wants to join a club on a downer. To make matters worse we probably can't even offer the going rate for the job.

More likely to be a relocation issue. Both Sheffield and Wolverhampton are not far from Stoke.

Plenty more fish in the sea.

Give me one single reason to feel positive. Ward constantly failed to sign experienced players when it mattered most and the same is happening to Dunne. This club is in a diabolical state from top to bottom and, as a season ticket holder I'm afraid I expect a lot more than I'm getting at the moment!

Looks as though jonjoe will not be coming back,dunne does not want him
quoted in the local bristol paper"o'toole will not get regular games".

Interesting when you look at the quotes from bristol,and the fact that apart from Bury at home we,ve lost the last 14 games,and we don't need a combatitive midfielder.

Im with you Baz. The majority of fans were desperate forJohn Ward to go which eventually happened but Cowling then appointed his rookie Assistant. It needed a clean sweep and a new Manager and back room team installed. The club is in a dire state. All these loanees coming in doesnt help one bit and our youngers arent good enough to progress bar one or two. Whats there to be positive about and asa paying customer I am entitled like others to our say! Dunne out and Cowling out or we wont bounce back up.

If you ask me Dunne is bonkers in not having some one with a bit of bite in their tackling. Jon Joe, better player than Wilson who yet seems to keep his place. Funny people these football managers.

Just seen that Jabo Ibehre has signed for us permanently on a free transfer but only until the end of this season. I think that justifies my opening comment!
