FORTY-TWO points should be enough to guarantee safety, right?

That’s what I was taught when I was growing up, back in the days when the Premier League had 22 teams, every child in the playground wanted to be Alan Shearer and Manchester United had a bigger following south of the Watford Gap than in their particular corner of the North-West (ok, so maybe some things never change!).

With FC Clacton having reached the 42-point mark with victory at Haverhill Rovers last month, any lingering doubts about our premier division future should have therefore been put to bed.

But with Hadleigh United and Haverhill Borough both picking up victories this past weekend, a glance at the table heading into Tuesday evening’s match at Wivenhoe Town was enough to show that matters weren’t settled just yet.

Certainly not for the hosts, who maintained a slim chance of survival but for whom defeat would confirm their relegation, while a win for ourselves, though not mathematically guaranteeing safety, would surely be enough to finally confirm step five football at the Rush Green Bowl next term.

And so it was time for us to enter the Dragons' Den, for the second time in a little under a month, following our 3-0 win at Broad Lane in the semi-final of the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup on March 21.

This time it took us under half an hour to build a three-goal cushion, with Billy Wales’ early strike added to by Jake Plane and Matt Eve, who slotted home with 27 minutes on the clock.

Eve then added his second of the game just after the restart and, despite the visitors threatening to launch the unlikeliest of comebacks in the second half, Keiron Baker’s header made it 5-2 with two minutes remaining, to seal both the points and the victory.

So premier division football is all but assured heading into our final six matches - one of which is next Tuesday evening’s Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup final against our neighbours Brightlingsea Regent.

Kick-off at the Taydal Stadium is at 7.45pm and all support would be appreciated.

Before that, we have another important league game at Stowmarket Town on Saturday and after a trip to Saffron Walden on the 28th.

We then end the season with three home matches in May.

We hope to see you at some point during our busy end to the campaign.

Come on you Seasiders!
