FC CLACTON’S Zach Smith-Walter is on a mission - to “keep the shirt” and pin down a regular starting spot in 2018.

Although he did not feature in the Seasiders’ thrilling 4-3 Boxing Day victory against Wivenhoe Town, the 18-year-old has been a regular starter in recent weeks and was in the team again for Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Histon.

Those appearances came after making his full debut in the League Cup tie against Coggeshall Town on November 1.

“I’m really enjoying it,” said the former Clacton Coastal Academy student.

“At the start of the season I wasn’t getting too much game time but that’s changed recently.

“I’m pleased with the way things are going, although I know there’s still room for improvement.

“It’s all about physicality in this league.

“There are a lot of big players so from my point of view it’s been a case of adapting.

“I love it, though, and love the boys here.

“There are a lot of big characters.

“I just want to keep going to keep my place in the team.

“That’s definitely my goal and I want to keep progressing.

“I want to keep the shirt and carry on playing with everyone.”

In addition to his personal ambitions, Smith-Walter - who has been playing for his hometown club since he was ten and starred for the under-18s last season - wants to help Clacton maintain their encouraging form in 2018.

The Seasiders are 14th in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division table after their nailbiting 4-3 win against Wivenhoe.

They finish the year with a trip to Stowmarket Town on Saturday.

“There’s such a great team spirit here,” added Smith-Walter.

“We’d been on a poor run but thankfully put things right against Ely, before Christmas.

“I like playing in big games and don’t think we need to fear anyone.

“We’ve just got to keep going, as a team, and keep working hard for each other.

“We’ve already got more points than the club managed last year and our aim now is to try and finish in the top half of the table.”
