IT was Guy Fawkes Night at the weekend and, along with the usual flashes and bangs, there were one or two fireworks at the Rush Green Bowl as FC Clacton overcame Saffron Walden Town 3-1.

Saffron Walden had been on a great run of form but it was Clacton who were on fire, with Jake Plane, dazzling like a sparkler, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes to put us in command.

After holding out from a spell of late first-half pressure, it was then Kevin Coyle’s turn to take the limelight as he fired in a rocket of a shot from long range to spark wild celebrations in the Clacton ranks, leaving the Saffron Walden goalkeeper as stationery as a guy on top of a bonfire.

Yeah OK, I’ll stop the fireworks night references now… Kevin’s goal was his 100th in Clacton colours and his 96th in the FC Clacton era, which is the Clacton equivalent of when Sky only use statistics from the Premier League years since 1992.

Football did exist before then but it’s a handy line in the sand to start your stats afresh!

Kevin is now just seven goals from Aaron Condon’s FC Clacton era record of 103 goals.

So I’m challenging Aaron to not give up his title without a fight and come back to defend his crown.

Come on Aaron, we know you don’t really like Brightlingsea (he told me Regent fans, I wouldn’t lie to you!). Why would you enjoy scoring 35 goals in a season and getting promoted?!

And anyway, white is much more your colour!

Saturday’s win also makes it just one defeat in ten league games - an impressive run that shows the new-found resilience in the side.

We are up to 12th in the table, probably higher than any of us would have expected at this stage after last season’s troubles.

We have a chance to push further up the table on Saturday when we travel to struggling Hadleigh United.

They’re a bit of a bogey club for us but hopefully we’ll be celebrating more FCC fireworks on Saturday evening!

Come on you Seasiders!
