FC CLACTON striker Terry Rymer is still backing himself to be a regular scorer this season - and says he and his team-mates must not let their confidence levels dip after a disappointing run of results.

The Seasiders have lost their last two matches and three of their last four.

They have failed to score in three of those matches - most recently Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Thetford Town and Tuesday's 3-0 reverse against Felixstowe and Walton United.

However, Rymer still has high hopes for the campaign - both personally and for his home-town team.

“I still believe in myself and know that when I get one goal, others will follow," the former Brightlingsea Regent and Holland FC man told the Gazette.

“I feel confident I can get 20+ goals.

“I’m working hard and have gone close to scoring more, but that’s been the story of my season.

“It’ll come, though. I’m getting fitter with every game and it was exactly the same when I was at Brightlingsea.

“I’d go ten games without scoring but still finish with more than 20.

“That happens with strikers but you’ve just got to remain positive.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s frustrating because as a front man you thrive on goals.

“But there are massive positives, both for me and the club.

"We’ve come on leaps and bounds from last season, as a team and in the way we’re playing. We’re just not getting the results.

“There’s definitely a buzz here, but we’re also a bit deflated because we know we should have more points on the board.

“We’ve just got to stick together and I don’t think we’ll be near the bottom this year.

“When we get another win, we’ll go on a nice little run and hopefully that will push us up the league. We’ll get there eventually.”

Rymer has scored twice this season, against Brantham Athletic and Stanway Rovers, and went close with a couple of headed efforts on Tuesday night.

Clacton found themselves trailing at the break and two goals early in the second half then killed the Thurlow Nunn League contest.

“I thought we were on top in the first half but a bad ten minutes right at the start of the second really cost us," added Rymer.

“From then on we were always chasing the game.

“We keep giving teams a head start and that’s killing us at the moment.

“We grow into the game but by then we’re already behind, sometimes with a mountain to climb – as was the case on Tuesday.

“Felixstowe are definitely a top-five side with quality all over the pitch and we can’t afford to let a team like that have a head start.

“But we’ve just got to keep going, because there are positives and there has been improvement. Most definitely.

“We’re just not getting the rub of the green at the moment but I’m confident that will change.

“We’re a work in progress, but we do need to start learning from our mistakes."

Kieron Shelley's side are now preparing for a double-header of Bank Holiday fixtures, with Saturday's premier division trip to Godmanchester Rovers being followed by a home game against Hadleigh United on Monday (both 3pm).
