Seasiders consider switching leagues

FC Clacton are investigating the idea of switching from the Ridgeons League to the Essex Senior League.

The Seasiders first applied to make the move in February - only to be turned down by the Football Association.

Now they have appealed against the decision and are waiting for a response.

Clacton joint-owner and secretary Stephen Andrews told the Gazette: "We just want to know, in principle, whether we can join the Essex Senior League.

"At this stage, we're not saying we definitely want that to happen. Just that we want to keep our options open.

"If we get the green light, then we'll arrange a big consultation period, whereby we discuss the situation with our members, players and supporters.

"If the overwhelming majority are against the move, then obviously we'll respect that and it won't happen.

"But I have to say that, as a committee, we feel it would be the right direction for the club to move in."

Andrews feels less travelling would be a major benefit, coupled with the fact it would represent a higher level of football in terms of the non-league pyramid.

On the flip side, the cons include lower attendances, worse facilities and a lesser standard and style of football.

Andrews said: "It would be a big decision but, when you weigh up the pros and cons, I personally feel it would be good.

"In the short term, it would reduce the amount of travelling we have to do and also give us a route to step five football. We are committed to playing at the highest level possible.

"In terms of our long-term ambitions, which are considerable, there will also be benefits."

Andrews admitted the idea first came up some time ago', but gathered pace as the club's promotion ambitions dwindled during last season's Ridgeons League division one campaign (they eventually finished tenth).

It was due to be discussed at an FA meeting in March, which was then deferred until May.

Since then, they have discovered their application was unsuccessful - and are now waiting back to hear whether their appeal has been successful.
