PIP Boyland has been confirmed as Tom Rothery's assistant manager and head coach at Brightlingsea Regent.

The ex-Stanway Rovers defender was named player-coach at the start of the season but suffered a knee injury which has seen him sidelined for most of the campaign so far.

Rothery was appointed manager on Friday afternoon, replacing long-serving boss James Webster, who stepped down to join Aveley.

"Pip has done a fantastic job holding the squad together, with the help of Alan Wright (kit man) and captain Matt Cripps, in the period between James and the majority of his staff leaving," said Rothery.

“I knew Pip before I joined and know what he offers as a coach.

"He’s very knowledgeable and articulate, so works really well with the players, and it's a good fit for him, me and the club.

"When Pip is able to play again, which will be next season, we may have to look at it again as being assistant might be too much, alongside playing.

"However, we are both happy to review that when the time comes.

"In the meantime, I feel it offers continuity for the players and the club.

"Somebody gave me my chance to start out in management and I’m really pleased to be able to give that same chance to Pip now.

"At 30 years of age, I think he’s got real potential to have a great career in coaching and management.

"Most importantly for me, I’m confident I’ve chosen the best man to assist me and help the club have more success in the future."
