FRINTON Lawn Tennis Club hosted their final ladies' doubles tournament.

The event was well-attended and the eventual winners were Linda Whip and Josephine Harpur.

Caroline Hogan and Marian Harpur were runners-up.

Meanwhile, Frinton's mixed C side hosted The Essex D, in the Colchester and District League.

After two wins at the start of the season, they were hoping to secure a third successive win at home.

While the grass courts played well, the weather was slightly against the players, with unexpected winds affecting play on section one.

Frinton's top pair, Clare Young and Richard Baldwin, landed victories of 8-6, 8-3, losing 1-8 to the first ranked Essex pair.

Captain Lesley Sacre and her partner, Jacob Lawrence, failed to hit their stride, losing all three sets 1-8, 3-8, 4-8.

However, they battled hard in all their matches and produced some enjoyable rallies.

Seasoned partnership Matt and Yvonne Gough had the same fate, losing their three sets 2-8, 3-8, 4-8.

Press officer Mary Milner said: "The games were hard-fought, but The Essex had the edge from the start.

"Richard and Clare were sensational and proved a force to be reckoned with.

"However, it was not enough to see off the strong Essex side.

"All pairs played extremely well, but credit must go to The Essex for sending a top-notch line-up who performed to a high standard on the night."

Elsewhere, Frinton's men's C side hosted rivals Kirby C.

The derby did not disappoint and close-fought games were played throughout.

Kirby eventually had the upper hand on the night.

Lawrence Knight paired with Brendan Mason, producing respectable scores of 8-3, 6-8, 6-8 with some very tight encounters.

Matt Gough and Richard Baldwin also performed well, winning one set 8-3 and losing out on the other two 5-8.

C team captain Jacob Lawrence partnered with Edward Ball.

Again, they took one set 8-2, losing two sets 6-8, with some impressive battles for points.

Lawrence recognised the tremendous efforts of his team, but the result was not enough to take the crucial points for second place in the division five table.
