FRINTON'S cricketers made a winning start to their Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League campaign.

They enjoyed a three-wicket victory against Norwich, largely thanks to four wickets from Kyran Young and three from Mervyn Westfield.

They dismissed their Norfolk visitors for just 110 before making 114 for seven in 32.2 overs.

Westfield and Dan Carter started keenly, with Westfield removing both Norwich openers.

Carter then chipping in with a wicket to leave the visitors struggling on ten for three.

Norwich were clearly beginning to regret their captain's decision to bat, having won the toss. Resistance to the Frinton onslaught finally came from skipper Ashley Watson (13) and Louis Sexton (33).

Frinton skipper Young then brought himself on to bowl and tore through the visitors with a devastating spell, taking four wickets for 17 runs, including a hat-trick which removed Watson, Sexton and Rupert King.

Frinton’s latest overseas player from their arrangement with the Barbados Cricket Association, 23-year-old Kemar Smith, the younger brother of legend Dwayne Smith, chipped in with a wicket and with Westfield returning to clear up the tail and finish with excellent figures of three for 17, the visitors were all out for 110.

Frinton's reply started poorly, with Michael Griggs caught behind for four.

Young then dropped anchor for 30 and the game looked all but over until Watson secured a remarkable five lbw decisions and Frinton were on the back foot at 103 for seven.

Having strengthened their lower order in the close season, any nerves quickly disappeared as Lewis Catlow and Tom Benn steered the hosts home with three wickets in hand.

Skipper Young was pleased with the points but pointed out the change of over format was not his choice.

"We joined the Premier League looking to test ourselves in the timed games, which we have greatly enjoyed," he said.

"We now have 50-over games in the first and last quarters of the season, following a league meeting at which only Swardeston and Frinton voted against these proposals."

Frinton’s second team travelled to Worlington but fell short of the hosts' 245 by 19 runs, despite a century from Johnny Hambrook.

A combined Frinton first and second team travelled to Sawbridgeworth on Sunday in the club's first outing in the National Club Championship.

They secured an easy six-wicket victory and an away tie in the next round to Colchester and East Essex on Sunday, May 14.

Frinton’s next home game is against Hadleigh, in the Two Counties Championship, at 1pm on Saturday.

First-team players will be available for selection, following the postponement of their fixture away to Cambridge Granta until Sunday.
