A FOUR ball better ball competition took place on the Havers Course at Frinton Golf Club.

The weather was abominable, with sheeting rain and high winds.

Despite this, the team of Simon Parkes and Phil Townsend won with an amazing score of 49 points.

Three teams finished on 43 points, with second place on countback going to the father-and-son team of Jason and Daniel Nicholls.

In third were Murray Northover and David Partridge, just ahead of Tracey Taylor and Yvonne Davies.

The latter recorded the best ladies’ score by quite a bit.

Meanwhile, the club's ladies played a ten-hole stableford.

The cold wind didn’t make playing conditions any easier.

However, Donna Oliver continued her fine form, winning with 20 points.

Margaret Dean came second with 17.

Two ladies came in with 16 points, with Lyn Lawrence awarded third place on countback, ahead of Yvonne Davies.

There was a Friday stableford competition, open to all members, and Chris Hemingway won it with a respectable 39 points.

Gary Chisnall was just behind him with 38.

Two men garnered 37 points, with Iain Quick awarded third place, just ahead of Kevin Maleary. Caroline Gard had the best ladies’ score with 32 points.

Meanwhile, 22 Frintonians escaped the winter doldrums, flying to the Penina Golf Resort in Portugal with the Coastal Golf Academy, organised by Tom Hide.

Seventeen of the golfers had been playing less than a year, so they had the opportunity to play other courses while under the supervision of a professional.

The ages of the participants ranged from 22 to 82.

Rob Bones was the leading player at the end of the three-day trip, winning the big prize.
