THERE was some fantastic judo on display at the Red Triangle Club when Walton Judo Club held their 46th annual Club Championships.

With four area champions in the field, everyone had to raise their game.

In a repeat of last year’s final, twins Alana and Perry Taylor Weeden faced each other for the Peter Chumbley Shield and title of Club Champion.

It was again a repeat in the result, with Perry throwing for maximum points to take the title.

The lightweight competition saw favourites Ben Wright and Scott Norwood comfortably make their way through to the final, with either capable of winning.

The group competition saw the two face each other earlier on, with a victory for Wright.

However, it was an even bet as to who would win this time around.

It was a great throw for Waza ari that saw Wright take the lead, but this was soon reversed by Norwood with his own throw, quickly into a hold down to take the Brendan Mitchell Memorial Trophy.

The first contest in the group competition kicked off the proceedings with a surprise victory for Evelyn Silvester, with a win over British Schools national champion Alana Taylor Weeden with a huge O-goshi (major hip throw).

This confirmed the decision to award her the Stedman Shield for the Most Progressive Girl.

The group event saw some notable judo, with maximum point scores for the first six contests.

A mix of experienced competitors and some in their first competition faced each other, with all displaying great skill and sportsmanship.

Finley Woods put in some solid performances to win medals in two groups, with only the experienced Daragh Bucke denying him a second gold.

Twins Oliver and Finlay Blanes fought determinedly throughout the day, with extra effort when they faced each other.

Fraser and Maddie Willing were both competing well, with some nice throws on the day, both earning a deserved silver apiece.

Area medallists Henry Spooner and Gemma Lewis were both not without challenge in their groups, but both won all their contests to take the golds.

Clary and Josie Frere, Thomas Binks and Simon Zhou all looked good for first-time competitors and will look forward to continuing to progress in 2017.

Special awards were made to Raymond Zhou, Kacper Lesniewski and Anya Nibre, for excellent performances on the day.
