THE annual Masters of Beer tournament between the three teams that play home T20 matches at Ashlyns Road was held in glorious late September sunshine on Saturday.

The first match saw Barflies post an excellent score of 138, with major contributions from Keith Waller, Ross Parry and James Pitman.

Opponents Rotarians bowled steadily, with Ross McAuley the pick of the bunch.

Rotary were given a good start by Mike Dooley and Jerry Wedge and with the latter and Gary Mason both reaching retirement, they looked well set to challenge the target set by Barflies.

Tight bowling from Brian Wilderspin-Webb and James Pitman restricted the Rotary score and wickets fell at regular intervals.

Although Wedge returned to continue the attack, Rotary eventually fell short by 17 runs.

The second match was a close affair between Barflies and Silvertons, with the former chasing down a modest total, thanks to a significant contribution from Julian Todd, with strong support later on from veteran Richard Deane.

The final match was reduced to 15 overs each side, with Rotary batting first and posting 101, thanks again to excellent batting from Dooley, Mason and Wedge.

Sivertons were given a great start by Jake Bettany and Zac Lowe, supported well by Ralph Mann.

However, Rotary bowled and fielded extremely well, with Tony Oram and young Josh Bowler producing miserly spells, giving victory to Rotary by seven runs.

Barflies were crowned champions once again, and they will celebrate tomorrow night at their annual awards evening, with entertainment provided by guest speaker and club captain Wilderspin-Webb.
