CHESHIRE were crowned County Cup kings at Frinton Lawn Tennis Club.

The Aegon Summer County Cup men's group three event was held on the Holland Road courts.

Six counties battled it out for promotion to men's group two - Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and North of Scotland.

They played a series of round-robin matches against each county, resulting in promotion, retaining position or relegation after five days' of play.

Lawn Tennis Association referee Chris Drew stated that Cheshire were just ahead on day four, but that there was all to play for on the final day.

However, it was the northern county that held on to take the honours.

Results: Day one: Norfolk 6 Lincolnshire 3, Cheshire 5 North of Scotland 4, Cambridgeshire 6 Berkshire 3.

Day two: Cheshire 7 Lincolnshire 2, Berkshire 5 Norfolk 4, Cambridgeshire 5 North of Scotland 4.

Day three: Berkshire 5 North of Scotland 4, Lincolnshire 5 Cambridgeshire 4, Norfolk 5 Cheshire 4.

Day four: Cheshire 6 Cambridgeshire 3, North of Scotland 5 Norfolk 4, Lincolnshire 5 Berkshire 4.

Day five: Cambridgeshire 6 Norfolk 3, Cheshire 5 Berkshire 4, Lincolnshire 6 North of Scotland 3.

The crowds thronged to Holland Road to watch the spectacular tennis on offer, with tour leaders Cheshire on the main show courts, playing Berkshire on the final day.

Frinton press officer Mary Milner said: "We are blessed to have this standard of tennis at our venue and people, including international visitors, visited in their droves.

"The Cheshire men delivered in style throughout, but all counties played some epic tennis.

"Our thanks go to all the players, LTA officials and our staff, who made this tournament a very special event."

The LTA tennis director also expressed his personal thanks to Frinton groundsman Matt Crown, for the superb maintenance of the courts for the tournament.
