CLACTON Golf Club are through to the last 16 of the Youth Shield competition.

The team travelled to Stoke-by-Nayland for their last league match of the year and needed to win on the notoriously difficult Constable course.

After emerging victorious, they have now progressed to the knockout stages for the second year running and their next opponents will be announced in two weeks. The tie will be played on August 6.

Clacton's Ben Rendell lost four and three to James Mack, Max Smith won five and three against Alex English, Katy Yates won three and two against Sam Nixon, junior captain Riley Faulkner won four and two against Henry Day and Josh Bethell won three and one against Matt Thompson.

In the reserves match, Wilf Elliott continued his winning streak and won his match in style.

Overall, the standard was high and most holes were won with pars or birdies.

Meanwhile, Clacton seniors vice-captain John Kemp welcomed opposite number Colin Potten and his team from Ipswich Golf Club.

The weather was good and following the large amount of rain over the past week the course was in good condition, despite two holes being closed due to waterlogging.

Results: John Kemp and Geoff Manning lost four and three to Colin Potten and Peter Gornall, Alan Price and Doug Nichols won seven and six against Mike Bradford and Vic Carey, Malcolm Pitcher and Maurice Tarrant won two and one against David Cordle and Colin Jennings, Richard Weeks and Peter Wiggins halved with Colin Firmin and Colin Bloomfield, Brian Longead and Don Dunham lost three and one to Paul Gowen and Mike Trower, Rick Hale and Brian Wiggins won two-up against David Pearman and Ken Taylor, Ian Wenman and Bill Clarke halved with Maurice Barnes and Michael Smy and John Wacker and John Fisher won six and four against Geoff Hebden and Andy Wilkinson.

Clacton won by four matches to two and the sides will meet again at Ipswich on August 26.

Clacton's ladies played for the Ford Trophy and winning in style was immediate past captain Julia Hewett, returning a bogey score of 0.

In second was lady captain Gilly Cullen, with minus one, and in third place was Sue Gurry, with minus two.

In fourth was Sandra Deavin, with minus three, on countback from fifth-placed Lorna Forder.

Angela Barratt was sixth, Denise Pink seventh and Sonja Strutt eighth.
