GAVIN Cowell claimed top honours in the Club Challenge Bowl at Frinton Golf Club.

It is a singles 18-hole medal with a maximum handicap of 24 and Cowell triumphed with a scoreof 69 nett.

Stuart Grimwade was in second place with 70 nett and three men came in at 71 nett, with John Sowton awarded third place on countback.

Frinton played Theydon Bois in the Thornton Cup Plate and the tie, with five matches at home and five away, was an emphatic 6½-3½ win for Frinton.

Tig Tanner, James Taggart, Joe Bushell, 14-year old debutant Jake Wells and Iain Quick all won handsomely at home for Frinton.

Theydon Bois fought back to take the first two matches on their home patch before debutant Harry Sanderson steadied the ship with a well-fought half.

Mitch McAuley sealed the tie with an impressive three and two win, before Theydon Bois took the final match, in a close battle, where another player making their debut, Luke Brown, narrowly lost one down.

The ladies played for the Flateau Cup, a medal with a maximum handicap of 24.

The scoring was very close, with six ladies finishing with scores of 80 nett, but vice-captain Marilyn Clarke won the cup on countback, ahead of Barbara Thorpe and Lyn Lawrence.

In the Friday stableford, Allan Hickey won with 38 points.

Kevin Smith was in second place with 35 and Adrian Joshua finished in third place with 34 points.

Meanwhile, at the Pro-Am at Wentworth last week, Tom Hide organised a coach trip for local primary school children.

It was a fantastic day, culminating in Jamie Sach holing the winning putt in the Golf Foundation Pro and Celebrity Putting Challenge.
