TENDRING Technology College student Myles Ashforth won gold and bronze medals at the British Youth Championships, in Sheffield.

The Kirby fencer struck gold in the under-14 boys' Epee.

He won all his poule fights to be ranked third, therefore earning a bye into the first round of direct eliminations (DEs).

In the DEs, Ashforth defeated the 35th seed 15/8, followed by an easy 15/6 victory against the 19th seed.

In the last eight, the former Rolph Primary School pupil met the sixth seed.

He was just ahead at the last break, when his opponent changed his sword to a pommel grip.

However, Ashforth was prepared for the switch of style and defeated his opponent 15/12.

In the semi-final, he was up against the seventh seed - another member of the England under-15 squad.

In a close fight, a focused Ashforth kept just ahead to win 15/12.

The final was against the eighth seed.

The Kirby fencer completely dominated and, with nine seconds left before the break, he lunged to bring the score to 14/2.

With only four seconds left, he sped down the piste, scoring the winning hit to become champion.

The next day, Ashforth competed in the under-14 Foil event.

Ranked 16th after the poules, he fought his way to a bronze medal, before being defeated by the eventual winner.
