FRINTON Cricket Club skipper Kyran Young praised his players for sticking to their guns after watching them roar to victory at Bury St Edmunds.

The Ashlyns Road side won by seven wickets to claim their first Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League victory of 2016.

It came just seven days after a nine-wicket defeat against Vauxhall Mallards, in which they batted first and were dismissed for just 78.

And Young praised his players for staying positive, sticking to their principles and bouncing back in style.

"It was a fantastic victory," said the Australian, who has taken over as skipper from Mark Jones.

"Looking back, I don't think we did too much wrong against Mallards.

"We didn't make too many mistakes but it was one of those days when things didn't go our way.

"It was a bit of a shock but the boys weren't too disheartened, because we knew that if we stuck to our guns and stayed positive we'd get things right.

"We knew we were better than the Mallards result suggested and, thankfully, that's the way it turned out on Saturday.

"We went into the match with the same game-plan and the guys were fantastic, showing exactly the right attitude.

"Usually it's the more senior players that stand up in that situation and the younger ones follow, but this time it was the younger ones who set the tempo and that was the most pleasing aspect."

Bury batted first at the Victory Ground and were all out for a 179, with Dan Carter producing an inspired performance to return stunning bowling figures of eight for 51.

Zimbabwean David Brent (76) and Murray Commins (69) then turned on the style with the bat as the visitors coasted home with seven wickets to spare.

"Dan was exceptional and bowled out of his skin," said Young.

"He got eight wickets and could have finished with ten, because he missed a caught and bowled and then bowled another one of their players - only for the stumps to stay up.

"Brenty and Murray batted very well and (wicket-keeper) Tom Benn also deserves great credit, because he was fantastic and set us up for the victory when he stumped (former Clacton player) Michael Comber."

Meanwhile, Frinton's second team also enjoyed a big win, by seven wickets, at home to Braintree.

There were a couple of wickets apiece for Jermaine Shillingford, Lewis Catlow, Joe McDevitt and Russell Stockdale as Braintree batted first in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one contest and finished on 140 for nine.

Sam Brynes then led the way with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 65.

Frinton's second team head to Coggeshall on Saturday.
