SEVEN enthusiastic ladies came to Frinton Tennis and Squash Club’s first “come and try” squash session.

Most of the girls had never played before and were looking for a sport that didn’t involve the wind and rain outdoors.

Coach Sue Vine was delighted with the numbers attending for the first session and, after a while bashing the ball around, the ladies were introduced to some of the more fundamental rules.

Squash as an indoor sport can be played in a short period of time as matches typically last for 40 minutes.

Some of the women had played badminton and tennis but were surprised as to how out of breath they got after a short period in comparison.

Squash has seen a recent revival nationally with, according to Sport England’s Active Survey report, an increase in participation of over 27,000 new players.

At Frinton, head squash coach Chris Vine is hoping to replicate that growth by providing new introductory classes and sessions for all ages, including a comprehensive primary schools outreach programme. For more information, contact Chris or Sue via the tennis club on 01255 674055.
