TENDRING Volleyball Club are setting their sights on an “amazing achievement”.

Both their men’s and women’s teams are in National Cup quarter-final action on Saturday.

The latter are first up, hosting Super 8s rivals Malory Eagles at Tendring Technology College, in Frinton, at 1pm.

The men then host London Lynx at the Essex University sports centre at 7pm.

Chairman Alex Porter believes success on both fronts would be a stunning achievement – and believes both teams can go all the way.

“It’s a very big deal for us,” he said.

“Every year we seem to break new records and both teams getting through to the semi-finals would be an amazing achievement.

“When you get to this stage of the competition everyone brings their A game.

“But who says we can’t go all the way?

“We’ll be up for both games and will enjoy playing Super 8s sides.

“Every single side, including us, is beatable but if we don’t believe in ourselves, no-one will.”

Both Tendring teams warmed up for this weekend’s games with victories on Saturday.

The women, who have never reached this stage of the National Cup before, enjoyed a crucial 3-2 Super 8s victory against Wessex.

The men, meanwhile, won 3-1 at St Albans Harriers, in National League division one. “I watched the girls’ game and some of the rallies were amazing,” said Porter.

“If they keep plugging away, I’m sure they’ll finish the season strongly.

“They beat Malory in a league game just before Christmas.

“But the team have improved since then and I’m anticipating another victory.”

Milly Stamp will face a late fitness test, to see whether she is able to play.

“She’s a great influence in defence and we’ll need her leadership to keep the pressure on our opponents,” added Porter.

“We’ll have a strong squad out, including Cece Spencer, who has missed the last couple of games due to illness.”

Tendring’s men reached the semi-finals once before losing to eventual winners, and the then reigning Super 8s champions, Leeds.

“The men’s team continue to get better every week and I’m confident we’ll win on Saturday,” said Porter.

“We beat St Albans Harriers last weekend and in addition to a couple of experimental sets, we demolished them in the other two.

“If we keep playing to the level I know we’re capable, we’ll surprise a few teams.

“Lynx are the team that beat us in a promotion play-off a couple of years ago, so we’re out for a bit of revenge.

“They’re not having the best of seasons but we want to play teams like them every week, in the Super 8s.

“We look forward to playing these sides and proving we should be at their level.

“If we get promoted this season, it’ll be good to play the big boys every week.”
