CLACTON Golf Club hosted their only Open competition of the year - the Battle of Britain event.

This popular 36-hole competition, which started in 1959, attracted competitors from all over the south of England.

The winners of the Spitfire Trophy, with an aggregate score for the 36 holes of 82 stableford points, were 81-year-old Clacton past captain Ken Headworth – a playing member of the club for the past 41 years – and his 31-year-old grandson Paul Howard-King.

The morning greensomes for the Bob Close Trophy was won by Steve Parkes and Kevin Hill, with 43 points.

The afternoon best ball for the Blenheim Trophy was won by Daniel Howard-King and Darren Simon, with 42 points.

Meanwhile, Clacton vice-captain Nick Smith and his team travelled to Colchester Golf Club to play in the clubs’ annual Matabele Bowl match.

Clacton were the holders of the bowl, following their home win in 2014.

However, Colchester wanted it back and fielded a strong side that proved too good in the end.

After a match in which some excellent golf was played, with several players playing level par golf, they were the winners by five matches to three.

Results: Nick Smith and Bob Davidson lost 6&5 to Colchester captain John Williams and Tim Rogers, Gary Lee and Max Smith won 3&2 against Dick Bokenham and Tom Rothery, Billy Leonard and Ronnie Miller lost 4&3 against Vic Pomphrett and Dave Blackmore, Matt Baker and Nick Apps won 2&1 against John Fisk and Michael Horley, Steve Scott and Jiwan Rai won 6&5 against Mike Withers and Paul Bishop, Steve James and Clayton Jeffrey lost 3&2 against Roger Robertson and Bill Eke, Fred Allerton and Michael Hewett lost one-down to John Redden and Mick Potter and Riley Faulkner and Danny Thomas lost 4&3 to Lorrie Austin and Dave Humberstone.

Clacton’s ladies’ section played for the Centenary Trophy on Ladies’ Day.

The 2015 winner was Fiona Cope, with a bogey score of plus one.

In second, with minus two, was Chris Crossfield and in third, with minus three, was Linda McKane.

Clacton’s seniors’ section played their September Medal, featuring 68 members.

The winner was Rick Hale, who returned 85-17-68.

In second was Dave Holden, with 84-15-69, on countback from third-placed seniors’ captain Joe Middleton, with 90-21-69, on countback from fourth-placed Brian Stringer, with 87-18-69.

Clacton’s junior golfers played for the Vertigen Trophy and the winner was Katy Yates, with 34 stableford points from her five handicap.

In second was junior captain Josh Bethell, with 31, and in third was Wilf Elliott, with 30, on countback from fourth-placed Sam Bruce.

Clacton seniors’ captain Middleton and his team of John Kemp, Doug Nichols, John Crick, Nigel Martin, Malcolm Taylor, Bill Clarke, Derek Woodrow, John Willson, Geoff Manning, Robin Routh, Bob Seggie, John Fisher, Ray Crossfield and Malcolm Pitcher all played well in the first-ever away match at Fynn Valley Golf Club.

After lunch it was announced that the match was drawn at four matches each.
