DEPLETED Frinton Golf Club pulled off a shock Thornton Cup win against a strong West Essex team.

Due to a number of withdrawals, team captain Vince McAuley drafted in a clutch of juniors to cover for the missing experienced players.

High winds and heavy rain greeted the golfers and these conditions persisted for most of the morning foursomes.

Frinton were 3-2 ahead at the lunch break.

Youngsters Harry Tweedy and Hamish Stubbs then pulled off a surprise two-up win.

Experienced pair Tigg Tanner and Pete Irwin also won two-up, with James Taggart and Chay Pratt also winning two-up.

High winds persisted for the afternoon singles and the points scoring followed in the same vein.

Frinton required five points to secure victory – Pete Irwin, Kevin Smith and Joe Bushell all won by 2&1, Taggart won 5&4 and Tanner recorded the vital winning point in a 3&2 victory.

Simon O’Brien was heading for victory when he shook hands on a half with Roy Gillman. Tweedy and Jim Webster also shook hands on a half.

Forty-one men and ladies competed for the Lorna Farebrother Salver on Saturday.

Only four clubs are allowed. Daniel Nicholls won with 34 stableford points.

Chris Hemmingway was second with 33 and John Bond was third with 32, on countback from Jason Nicholls.

The ladies with handicaps of 28 and under played a bogey competition, while those above played a stableford.

The bogey competition was won by Angela Low with -2.

Michelle Lawton was second place with -3. Shiela Attrill came in third on countback with -4, ahead of Barbara Thorpe. Angela Vaughan won the stableford on 24 points, with Audrey Joshua second with 23. Maria Naden was third with 21.

On the Kirby course, Jan Harrison won their competition with 35. Mary Johnson was second on 32, with Bernadette Sylvester third, on countback, with 28, ahead of Patricia Freear.

Frinton won the Junior Shield game 3-2 against Three Rivers.
