TENDRING’S top sporting talent has been rewarded at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The Tendring Sports Personality Awards were held earlier tonight at the Princes Theatre, in Clacton.

There were prizes up for grabs for individuals, teams, coaches and volunteers.

Powerlifter Joseph Strike followed up last year’s Junior Male Sports Personality success by being crowned Male Sports Personality of the Year.

During a glorious last 12 months, he has set new British records, became a British champion and was the winner of the East Midlands Bench Press Championship, in Colchester.

He also became a regional record-holder and now has a chance to qualify for next year’s Powerlifting Commonwealth Games, in Canada.

The Female Sports Personality of the Year prize went to Suzanne Warren.

The Holland-on-Sea swimmer, who has a severe neurological movement disorder, has not let her disability stop her enjoying her love for sport.

She has an impressive list of achievements and ended last year with British rankings.

In 2014 she won a number of medals and finished the long-course season by being ranked number one in Britain in all eight classifications of the 50m and 100 backstroke, 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

She also holds British records for the 200m individual medley and 100m backstroke, in addition to achieving PBs at the British International Para-Swimming Championships.

Fencer Myles Ashforth won the Junior Male Sports Personality of the Year award, while the female prize went to karate’s Charlotte Hope.

Chase Lane boys’ football team were the team of the year while there were also big wins for Holland FC - Sports Club of the Year - and their proud chairman Mark Sorrell, who was named Unsung Hero.

Geoff Johnson and Norman Hoadley were the joint-winners of the Sports Coach of the Year prize and there were also awards for Tendring Technology College and Clacton Coastal Academy.

The awards are a partnership between Tendring Council and activetendring and the event was again supported by the Clacton, Frinton and Walton Gazette and the Harwich and Manningtree Standard.
