CLACTON powerlifter Cliff Haynes had a day to forget at the British Bench Press Championship, in Colchester.

The 49-year-old went into the competition as reigning champion in both the Open and Masters One category (for those aged between 40 and 50).

However, on this occasion he was disqualified on technical grounds by two of the three judges.

“I’m philosophical about it,” said Haynes, who was this year competing in the Masters Two category (for 50 to 60-year-olds).

“I’m very happy with my strength levels but will try and learn from my mistakes.

“The rules are very strict and you have to be technically perfect. On this occasion I wasn’t.”
